Nevada City Cohousing

Vision: Create a co-housing project within walking distance of downtown Nevada City using principles of smart growth and protecting open spaces.

Challenge: The project was opposed by a coalition of no-growth activists and preservationists who were concerned that the project didn’t fit in with Nevada City’s historic architecture.

Solution: CDA Strategies trained members of the co-housing group, many of whom had never been involved in politics before, on how to engage in the political process. We provided the tools to educate local decision makers and organize a supportive coalition.

Success: The city council approved the project. And the residents of Nevada City Cohousing have established that they are active stakeholders with a powerful voice in local affairs.
